Cognitive vs. affective listening modes and judgments of music - An ERP study

2010

The neural correlates of processing deviations from Western music rules are relatively well known. Less is known of the neural dynamics of top-down listening modes and affective liking judgments in relation with judgments of tonal correctness. In this study, subjects determined if tonal chord sequences sounded correct or incorrect, or if they liked them or not, while their electroencephalogram (EEG) was measured. The last chord of the sequences could be congruous with the previous context, ambiguous (unusual but still enjoyable) or harmonically inappropriate. The cognitive vs. affective listening modes were differentiated in the event-related potential (ERP) responses already before the end…

Essential knowledge for patients with rheumatoid arthritis or spondyloarthritis: Results of a multicentric survey in France among health professional…

2019

Abstract Objective Information and education are recommended for patients with inflammatory arthritis including rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and spondyloarthritis (SpA). However, there is no consensus on which knowledge is essential to enhance patients’ self-management. The aim of this study was to determine such knowledge. Methods Based on published knowledge questionnaires (KQs) collected by a systematic literature review, a list of items was elaborated, classified in domains and sub domains. A Delphi process was performed with rheumatologists, healthcare professionals and patients in 2014–2015, selecting the items considered useful. Results Three published KQs were analysed: 2 for RA; 1 for…

Physiotherapy Students’ Experiences about Ethical Situations Encountered in Clinical Practices

2021

(1) Background: It is important to explore the ethical situations that physiotherapy students encountered in their clinical practices. (2) Methods: Qualitative, explorative, descriptive study. The participants included third-year physiotherapy students. They had to write five narratives about ethical situations encountered in their clinical practices. Krippendorff's method for qualitative content analysis was used to cluster units within the data to identify emergent themes. The study protocol was approved by the authors' University Ethic Committee of Human Research (H1515588244257). (3) Result: 280 narratives were reported by 64 students (23.34 ± 4.20 years, 59% women). Eight categories we…

Effect of observer experience in the differentiation between benign and malignant liver tumors after ultrasound contrast agent injection.

2009

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of the observer level of experience on the diagnostic performance of contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging (CEUS) for differentiation between benign and malignant liver tumors. METHODS: From a computerized search, we retrospectively identified 286 biopsy-proven liver tumors (105 hepatocellular carcinomas, 48 metastases, 7 intra-hepatic cholangiocarcinomas, 33 liver hemangiomas, and 93 nonhemangiomatous benign lesions) in 235 patients (140 male and 95 female; mean age +/- SD, 56 +/- 11 years) who underwent CEUS after sulfur hexafluoride-filled microbubble injection. The digital cine clips recorded during the arterial (10-35 seconds…

The practice-driven evolution of family business education

2007

Abstract Starting from Calder's dissertation in the early fifties, key developments in family business education are presented in a 130-item chronology. The emergence of the field is tracked to the demand from practitioners rather than the pull of scholarly inquiry. Causal evolutionary drivers of variation, selective retention, and struggle for survival, provide a framework for understanding the past and current status of the knowledge base for family business and hinting at future development. The critical role of infrastructure – family business centers and professional associations – is evident in the path dependent evolution and growth of the field. Although the last two decades have wi…

Journalism or public relations? A quantitative survey of custom publishing editors in Germany

2016

Abstract Custom publishing, the production of content that is edited in a journalistic manner for organizations, is a fast-growing professional field located at the intersection of journalism and public relations. These corporate (or organizational) publications, as a form of strategic communication, assist with organizations' image cultivation and aim to communicate their particular interests. However, in their stylistic, optical, and thematic composition, they resemble journalistic publications from which readers expect unbiased, objective reporting. This article focuses on the editors of these corporate publications, who must take into account the rules and norms of two different fields …

An undergraduate thesis training course for faculty reduces variability in student evaluations

2020

Abstract Background The undergraduate thesis evaluation process is one of the most prevalent weak points in universities; the literature indicates the need to orient undergraduate thesis evaluators through specific training initiatives. Objectives The aim of this study was to analyze the discrepancies between the grades awarded by undergraduate thesis supervisors and by the panel of faculty examiners, and the effect of training targeted to faculty members. Design and methods A cross-sectional study was performed during the 2015–2016 academic year in a Spanish Nursing School. Settings and participants We analyzed the mean grades from undergraduate thesis evaluation rubrics and the effects of…

2021

Abstract In an ever-evolving technological landscape that challenges teaching professionals' digital competence, this study complements previous studies by providing an overall picture of teaching professionals' digital competence. We employed regression models on two large-scale assessment data sets on teachers from 11 countries—namely, the Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS; n = 50,800) and the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC; n = 2590)—to investigate through the theoretical lens of digital competence how teaching professionals' skills, attitudes and knowledge distribute and relate, and how they are associated with personal and contex…
